ASB divisions

Experience across ASB's wide number of product divisions is available to you based on your skill set and specific area of interest.

Audit and Assurance

Our Audit and Assurance department is an excellent training ground, where you'll help the bank achieve important strategic objectives by systematically evaluating and improving the effectiveness of governance, risk management, and internal controls.

Your data analysis skills will be developed, and you'll learn to bring data to life, using it to identify weaknesses and opportunities across a broad range of important business processes.

Corporate, Commercial and Rural Banking

ASB is proud to count some of New Zealand's largest and most successful corporations amongst our clients. The Corporate and Commercial Banking team helps those customers optimise their capital structure and financial flows. Here you'll learn about global financial markets, large scale transactional banking and trade finance, and our on-going commitment to building fantastic client relationships.

You may also be involved with the product and strategy teams, which provide direction and insight to commercial and corporate customers, or you may work with our Specialist Industries team who focus on customers in key industries, as well as Maori banking, asset finance, professionals, and franchising. Alternatively ASB Rural Banking has built up a great name for itself in the past few years, based on the quality of its people - most of whom have a rural background - and our absolute dedication to supporting sustainable success for businesses in the rural sector. You can see why experience and skill makes all the difference in a specialist market, and why building long-term relations equals long-term success in this award-winning Rural Banking team.

The Finance team is responsible for providing accurate financial information to business units at the bank, and it's a lot more than simply accounting. You'll learn about management reporting, statutory, regulatory and performance reporting, and how financial results are impacted by margins, funding and sales - from both the revenue and cost perspective. You may also enjoy experience with our Treasury team, which is known as the 'banker to the bank'. This team ensures that ASB has adequate reserves to cover risk and has the capital we need to fund future activities.

The legal department focuses on minimising legal risk for the ASB Group. There are two units within the legal division.

Regulatory Affairs. This team's purpose is to persuade the government to adopt policies, which align with the ASB Groups strategic and commercial interests. This can include minimising the risk of adverse regulation and capitalising on opportunities for regulatory change. You'll learn how we maintain positive working relationships with key government ministers and officials, regulators and industry groups.

Secretariat. This team provides company secretariat services and works to protect the ASB Group from risks to our reputation and operations.

Marketing and Communications

We're different to other banks and we have a great story to tell. As part of our Marketing and Communications division you'll get a chance to share our message and help us stand out from the crowd. You'll ensure that all our communications have a clear and consistent look, feel and voice. You'll also help devise smart marketing and advertising strategies.

You could also work with our Corporate Communications team talking to 5000 ASB staff internally, interacting with our customers on social media, managing PR, and exploring market trends. Or work with our Community and Sponsorship team on exciting sports and cultural events like ASB Classic tennis event and ASB Polyfest.

The Operations division provides the bank with support and advisory services. There are six teams:

  • Lending, Cards and Customer Support documenting, advancing, maintaining, reconciling and servicing customers Lending and Credit Card requirements.
  • Payment Operations - focused on delivering straight through, end-to-end payments services and support functions.
  • People Advisory - first port of call for all people matters.
  • People Operations - responsible for people systems and payroll.
  • Wealth Operations - Responsible for the administration and support of our Wealth products.
  • Worksmart - continuously what we do to make things better and easier for customers and staff.
Retail and Business banking

Building a fantastic relationship with our customers and delivering unbeatable service is key, and at ASB our retail branch network is where the magic happens.

In this division you'll have the opportunity to experience an exciting variety of challenges. Depending on your stream, you could deal with customer queries and help people achieve their financial goals at a branch level, go behind the scenes to manage risk and reporting, be involved in product development, market implementation, portfolio analysis, or assist in the coordination and management of stakeholders from around ASB.

The Risk division is responsible for managing our risk exposure and setting and monitoring the Bank's appetite for risk. Within this division are a number of teams with different responsibilities.

The Credit Risk Management team provides quantitative analysis and support to portfolio managers. You'll get end-to-end exposure to all aspects of risk management and learn how the bank uses scorecards and statistics to improve decision-making, and how to develop new risk initiatives.

The Market Risk team's role includes valuation of market instruments, and preparation of reports covering market conditions and global risks for the bank's Risk Committee. It's a great introduction to risk management in financial markets and Treasury.

Talent Development and Corporate Strategy

People are our number one priority. The way we reward them, harness their key skills, and find the right teams to put them in, creates a great environment to work in and enables us to achieve our long-term vision.

Working in our Talent and People teams you'll help develop career paths, and work with talent managers to find the people who give ASB its 'people advantage'. There may also be opportunities to help develop initiatives and policies to maintain our diverse working environment as our staff need to feel confident bringing their 'whole self' to work. Depending on your stream you may also have experience in the exciting and dynamic environment of Corporate Strategy - where your research, analytics, event organisation skills will be used.

Technology and Innovation

ASB was the first bank to recognise the value of information technology, and we have never lost our focus on developing world-class customer-centric innovations.

In our Technology & Innovation department you will join teams of talented Technology specialists including software engineers, infrastructure engineers, security experts, and data analysts. You will also learn the importance of understanding the end-user technology, risk and compliance.
